Region
Fayoum Oasis is located 100 km from the southwest of Cairo. It is characterized by diversity and breathtaking natural landscapes that are exciting for reflection. Fayoum is a natural depression covering an area of about 12,000 square kilometers.
This region has the earliest evidence for farming in Egypt, and was a center of royal pyramid and tomb-building in the Twelfth dynasty of the Middle Kingdom, and again during the rule of the Ptolemaic dynasty. Faiyum became one of the breadbaskets of the Roman world.
Sobek was a god of the Nile who brought fertility to the land. As the “Lord of the Waters” he was thought to have risen from the primeval waters of Nun to create the world and made the Nile from his sweat.
